Can Therapists Attend a Client’s Wedding or Graduation?

May 4, 2026

What should a counselor do when an invitation from a client challenges their professional boundaries? In this video, we explore the complex ethics of attending client events, including a wedding, graduation, and funeral through three case examples.

Navigating the “gray areas” of ethics is rarely easy. Using three case studies and the ACA Code of Ethics, we’ll break down the specific codes regarding extending counseling boundaries, respect for privacy, informed consent and more.

In this video, we cover the cases of Arlo, Quinn, and Iris. You’ll want to check out the video to hear about each case and the discussion around them.

Note: Each of these case examples are fictional. These case presentations are for entertainment and educational purposes. Any resemblance that these cases have to real situations is purely coincidence.
