What are Holland’s Personality Types? NCE & CPCE Study Guide

In the category of Career Development on the National Counselor Examination (NCE), the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE), or another counseling exam, you’ll come across ideas related to John Holland’s six personality and six work environments types.

Holland’s six personality types (realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional) are covered in this video, as well as congruent and incongruent types. We’ll also cover the concept of RIASEC and core assumptions of his theory.

Holland’s Personality and Career Types

What is Holland’s personality and career typology? Currently considered to be the most popular approach in career counseling, John Holland’s personality and career typology is personality theory that features six personality types and corresponding work environments.

What are the four assumptions of Holland’s theory? The first assumption of the theory is that there are six basic personality types. Second is that there are six work environments. Third is that each personality type will seek out a corresponding environment. Such as the artistic type working in an artistic occupation. His fourth assumption is that people’s behavior is a combination of their personality and the environment they’re in.

What are Holland’s six personality types? The six types are realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional.

What is RIASEC? The order of the six types is actually somewhat important, and RIASEC is a way to help you remember the types in order. The reason that remembering the types in order is important is because people will often have more than one type. Or, their personality may go beyond just one type. When this happens, if their types go into adjacent types, this is called congruent. If not, their types would be incongruent.

What is the artistic type? For those with an artistic type, they will often value expression and feel creativity is important. This might include authors, singers, artists, poets, or musicians.

What is the conventional type? Those in the conventional type will include people who appreciate rules and structure. Occupations that fit this type might be secretaries, clerks, or bank tellers.

What is the enterprising type? When in comes to the enterprising type, these people may dominate or lead others. Salespeople, politicians, or business owners might fit into this category.

What is the investigative type? The investigative type will include people who enjoy abstract thinking. As for occupations in this type, that might be philosophers or mathematicians.

What is the realistic type? For those in this in the realistic category, they will often enjoy working alone with machinery or tools. This type might work as a farmer, mechanic, engineer, or truck driver, to name a few.

What is the social type? In the social type, these people enjoy interpersonal interactions. For those in the counseling field, you will very likely fit into this category. Occupations that fit into this category might be counselors, social workers, or teachers.

What are congruent personality types? Some may have personality types go into adjacent types, which is referred to as being congruent. For example, someone whose primary type is investigative, but is also someone somewhat realistic and artistic would be seen as congruent.

What are incongruent personality types? If someone has personality types that spill into non-adjacent types, this would be referred to as being incongruent. For example, if they were primarily investigative with some realistic and some enterprising, this would be incongruent.
